Shared roots, common future
A quiet fishing river in the middle of an open ground in the forest of Retz, near the fertile plateau of the south region of Soissons, all crossed by the large stones of an ancient road, that took Bernard de Clairvaux and some monks, in 1132, to found a new Cistercian community, now the Abbey of Longpont.
Buffeted by wars, storms, fires, and finally by the Revolution who were hunting the monks away and sold the convent buildings as a stone quarry, the abbey, composed of impressive ruins, was saved by the family of Montesquiou. It is now superb and romantic surroundings in the cotterézien region, popular with artists.
| The charming valley of the Savière, which runs by the edge of our forest, is the setting of a unique heritage that attracts visitors throughout the year : the abbey, the huge open-air church, the cloister, the Gothic cellar, the old cooker of the monks and the palace of the abbey from the 18th century- And in the village : the fortified gate with four turrets (remnant of the medieval walls), the main gate of the abbey and the farms “ La Grange de Vivier “, of Chavigny, de Beaurepaire, de la Grille, all well preserved despite the destructions of 1918.
Rare detail in France: the Abbey has always been used as a church for the village. For two centuries, Longpont had a church of private property, open under the arches of the old cellar from the 14th century and dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Two beautiful shrines are visible.
In all seasons, international tourism will find room and board at Longpont and can take advantage of an exceptional place and beautiful traditional stone homes. The hikers can take different hiking trails that intersect near the old wash house, La Belle Croix or the secular Jeu d’Arc. The photographers never get tired of watching these noble ruins, especially the rose window of the hollow facade which opens to the sky ... an opening of ten meters in diameter!
